Frequently Asked Questions.
Can chickenpox cause shingles later in life?
Yes. After recovery, the varicella-zoster virus stays dormant in the body. It can reactivate years later as shingles (herpes zoster), a painful rash often in older adults.
Can a vaccinated person still get chickenpox?
Yes, but it’s rare. Breakthrough cases tend to be mild, with fewer blisters and low or no fever.
Can chickenpox spread through clothing or surfaces?
It spreads primarily through airborne droplets and direct contact with lesions, not via clothing. However, contaminated surfaces may carry the virus briefly.
Should adults get the chickenpox vaccine?
Adults who’ve never had chickenpox or the vaccine should consider getting vaccinated, especially if they’re in close contact with children or are planning pregnancy.
